i've conceded defeat by the Hats. You can't remix a distro that won't install.

tomman
"don't break Debian!"
-
tomman
and yet, people still Frankendebian, it's a fact of life

i am not learning another less sophsticated ecosystem than the one i just rejected tho tomman

/memfd:mozilla-ipc (deleted) shows up on a lot of ps -A lines, with "Isolated Web Co" using more CPU on average than SM or Chrome. I just updated to 2.53.24 on 1 Aug. Could this be some SM bug stemming from some web page? I have >100 tabs open, and don't recognize Isolated Web Co, which accounts for 25k lines in PS -a output. :p

mastodon.social/@jwz/117055092437643826 meanwhile someone doesn't want visitors to their website anymore
-
tomman
> @shaoyu Yes, I have blocked the entire country of Taiwan.
-
tomman
at least he DOES recognize Taiwan is a country! Oops, JWZ is now banned in China :D
-
d|ver
I have blocked all CN user agents :) instead of 300 netblocks
-
d|ver
it worked! 2 collateral damages/year

tomman: is that a response to my comment?
-
tomman
a-865: nah, just mentioning some dumb crap from The Father of Mozilla

d|ver: meanwhile I had to file a complaint at my web hosting because noone at Turkey could access my website
-
tomman
(I have two legit users there)
-
tomman
turns out they did had a blocklist they hadn't disclosed, including the whole of Singapore and Turkey
-
d|ver
:/
-
tomman
I guess my website is so irrelevant slop bots have largely ignored it so far
-
tomman
Fortunately they agreed to lift the blocks for Turkey, once I asked nicely
-
tomman
told them that while I agree that we live in a eternal threatscape of doom in the slop era, blocking legit users to my website is never acceptable
-
d|ver
mine too, but 6 motnths ago it was linked from a sample sit with 5 million samples, each containing a link to my site, so the insanity started
-
tomman
These days I mostly use my webhosting space as a glorified email and imagehost
-
d|ver
I fought months agains IP blocks, then they made a mistake, using CN user agent ;)
-
d|ver
one rule to rule them all!!1
-
d|ver
meta, google, etc... are easier to block, fucking chineees
-
tomman
Ironically, that reminds me the one time I had someone trying to DoS my home gear, back in my public DHCPv4 over ADSL years
-
tomman
some idiot was trying to bruteforce SSH on my routerbox...
-
tomman
...which was bringing that lowly Pentium MMX @225MHz down to its knees, begging for mercy
-
tomman
turned out to be a IP from a Tencent datacenter at Singapore
-
d|ver
haha
-
tomman
the whole machine would turn unresponsive with, what, 5 concurrent connections of bruteforcing?
-
tomman
had to physically unplug the modem, move the SSH server to another port (it was already on a non-standard one!), and edit my WAN MAC address to get a fresh IP from the pools
-
d|ver
In the 2000s I had a DIY DSL linux router with an extra monitor running a live tcpdump viewer
-
d|ver
every minute cam a UPD packet CKCKCAAAAAAAAAA from mostly Guangdong/China
-
tomman
And after checking the box login records, turns out that pest had been trying to break in from different IPs, but didn't bothered launching a bruteforce attack
-
d|ver
netbios worm exploit ;)
-
tomman
Except that this was a Debian box
-
tomman
... a veeeeeeery underpowered Debian Stable box
-
d|ver
the linux router could be booted from a 1.8MB formatted floppy
-
d|ver
but I added a HD later ;)
-
d|ver
the days where everything was unencrypted
-
d|ver
and you could follow the traffic live in real time
-
d|ver
if you didn't click anything, no traffic
-
d|ver
now watching the live trafffic makes no sense at all
-
d|ver
same for regmon/filemon
-
tomman
I ran that Pentium box as my main router until July 2022... when a power surge killed it for good
-
d|ver
thunderstorms killed 2 DSL modems and one fritz box :/
-
d|ver
then I started to panic whenever a storm came in, pulling all plugs ;)
-

MozArella (just saying)

Does SM have some way to show what FF shows with URL about:processes?
-
d|ver
would be in about:about ?
-
a-865
what else might it be called?
-
d|ver
about:performance
-
d|ver
?
-
d|ver
more
-
d|ver
seamonkey uses 1 process
-
a-865
killall got rid of the 25k processes offender, but if it returns I want to get more info
-
d|ver
on windows...
-
d|ver
100 tabs, 25k processes is not in my universe thinkable
-
njsg
even on a thinkpad?
-
d|ver
10 tabs.. why leave the other ones open?
-
njsg
nice pebcak I did here, turning it off and on again is actually appealing...
