MattATobin
okay, i have to be honest.. aside from the primitive state of some of most things.. the gecko/1.8.1 codebase is pretty much everything I have ever wanted.
-
MattATobin
so why was firefox necessary?
-
-
MattATobin
:P
-
MattATobin
Bon Echo... i have such fond memories associated with the name because of this code
-
MattATobin
rv:1.8.1.24 Gecko/20230726
-
MattATobin
LOL
-
KaiRo[m]
bonecho had great t-shirts, I'm still sad I didn't get one
-
MattATobin
hi kairo
-
MattATobin
:/
-
MattATobin
kairo.. what the hell happened to us.. all of us that got us from that to here?
-
MattATobin
Other than Google.
-
MattATobin
what did WE do wrong?
-
MattATobin
IF we can find an answer to that question I think it would help a great many people.
-
MattATobin
the moonies still haven't fixed their bug.. means I am gonna have to cause I like working unknown content save as dialog.. boy I am glad no one is interested in screwing with 1.8 tho save a couple macinpeople
-
MattATobin
where's the logbot.. frg gave me some relevant bug numbers beyond what I tracked down using github commit history magic
-
frg_Away
-
MattATobin
damn i am out of practice porting crap
-
MattATobin
still hopefully the rabbit hole won't go any deeper for my purposes
-
MattATobin
-
MattATobin
where is frg
-
MattATobin
i wanna complain to frg about it
-
MattATobin
lol
-
MattATobin
HEY
-
MattATobin
remember when THIS was mozilla?
-
-
MattATobin
and then mozilla became this
-
-
MattATobin
and this project and eventually anything not firefox or even remotely netscape like was kicked to the side
-
MattATobin
I remember that.
-
tomman
18b1 consistently resets my search engines to whatever ancient version it likes
-
tomman
(AKA it keeps replacing Wikipedia EN with Yahoo Argentina, but it leaves AniDB and VNDB in place)
-
tomman
I'm pretty much sure this time it is NOT bad RAM :P
-
MattATobin
hi tomman
-
tomman
yo MattATobin
-
tomman
have you done your backups for today to keep the DR boogeyman away?
-
tomman
don't be like the owner of this Suckgate I'm cloning right now to figure out the degree of FS corruption on it
-
MattATobin
backups?
-
MattATobin
what
-
MattATobin
is anything I been doing actually important?
-
MattATobin
NO ONE TOLD ME!
-
MattATobin
i had filesystem corruption while back if you recall
-
MattATobin
i think it came from newer-than-ltsc 2019 windows 10
-
MattATobin
compounded with filesystem weakening from switching between nt61 and 62+
-
tomman
Windows Me made me learn the importance of doing frequent backups, since I would be reinstalling it twice a year at least
-
MattATobin
both are seperate but fs issue causing things
-
tomman
Seagate made me learn the importance of doing full-disk backups, since HDDs can and will crash with no warning
-
MattATobin
well wanna give me enough money to get enough space to back everything up properly and not just a critical subset?
-
MattATobin
i'd be down for it
-
frg_Away
tomman if you have something reproducible with a clean install I will see if I can track it down. Search engine code was trashed after 57 but I think we didn't take anything bad intentionally here.
-
MattATobin
hi frg
-
-
MattATobin
well completely style with modern it looks fantastic .. classic not so much and web rendering not so much
-
frg_Away
hi
-
-
MattATobin
BinOC loads better
-
MattATobin
lol
-
MattATobin
how have you been frg
-
frg_Away
well the old versions usually don't load anything https these days either.
-
MattATobin
i been spouting tobinness all over for days but haven't much talked directly to you except about bugs
-
frg_Away
Meeting with friends and backporting js stuff. Well into 59/60 now. Last vacation day.
-
MattATobin
fun
-
frg_Away
Melting a bit here now again too :)
-
MattATobin
I am seriously consdering renaming the Aura Runtime Platform to the Grandiose Runtime Environment (so it can still be gre) and do mariner and interlink but focus my real attention on the 1.8.1 xpfe core
-
MattATobin
it is what I w a n t to do
-
frg_Away
Personally I think the old stuff will go nowhere. Pick a fork or source level of your liking and enhance it.
-
MattATobin
but i feel a sense of continued responsibility to any remaining users and those who have done nothing against me or anyone to still provide some messure of the buffer between the carelessness of others and those who might care about such things
-
MattATobin
oh if you think i am gonna do netscape navigator on gecko 1.8 do remove that concept from your head
-
MattATobin
i want it for its technology and methodology and because it is so old and simple and modular .. it can wrap much more sophistcated stuff in addition to its own facilities as a command and control fx
-
MattATobin
and ux renderer
-
MattATobin
it is fast as HELL on this machine
-
MattATobin
even without hardware acceleration
-
MattATobin
it is quick
-
MattATobin
the xpfe splashscreen barely gets through the fade in its so fast
-
MattATobin
and that is at least a 1 second fade
-
frg_Away
Yeahh but unless you plan to be compatible with 5 minor websites only you need to be web compatible these day. Building from the ground takes years and then you are 5 years back again. It is all forked up thanks to google and web frameworks just pushing bleeding edge junk.
-
MattATobin
i am seriously consdering locking http down to a whitelist until i have time to deal with it but I only ever intend to take the evolution of the core to pre-html5 and es6 levels
-
frg_Away
anyway need sleep nn
-
MattATobin
initial goal of a 1.9.2 level of rendering capability and js
-
MattATobin
good night dude
-
MattATobin
i'll shut up about this for some days
-
MattATobin
for the sanity of all
-
MattATobin
thank you tho
-
MattATobin
all of you
